We had a fun day with a visit from our community garden leader asking for us to make rocks that look like strawberries to confuse the birds and painted markers for the end of seed rows. The kids did glue sunflower resists. They drew their flower with glue and sprinkled on some salt for sparkle. After dry they used oil pastels to color and blend their flowers. We created a cute little watercolor of a vase of flowers, learning to layer, and used Posca pens for our details to make things “pop”. We also did leaf rubbings with neon crayons and talked about each side of the leaf and which side created a better pattern and talked about overlapping and color. Then we ended the day with drawing a sunflower in styrofoam (you can use plates from home), Then created multiple prints using proper printmaking tools and supplies. Speedball ink, bracers, inking plates, and they loved massaging the back of their paper and then 1,2,3 reveal!!! So cute they even came up with a shimmy shake while massaging- lots of fun creating and building on our art skills.
I cut paper in lines and squares for the students. At this age scissors are very difficult. Then they glued colored colored construction paper down, after we talked a little about Mondrian art. They were very proud of their art and it made a great back to school night project that could be done in a day.
We had fun viewing art from James DeRosso and created oil pastel monsters on black construction paper. Learning to blend and just go for it, (and pencils used). I find students take too long if given pencils and worry about every detail rather than just going for it and also learning that oil pastels can be layered to make any changes to their art. Make sure to go over all lines after again with a black oil pastel to make our art pop!
3rd graders inspired by Vincent Van Goghs starry night and sunflowers. I just love how these turned out fantastic!!!
We were sooo lucky and thank ful to Donors Choose project that was funded by several donors. Their donations made it possible for every child in our school to do a piece of pottery. WOW! What a blessing and sooo much fun! Most students were so excited they had never used clay. So thankful for: Google.org, Gymboree, Bernadette Kelly, The Harris Family, Jennifer, Joanne and TJ Minasi. Their donations supplied us with paints, clay tools, clay and supplies for 650 students to do a small clay item. What an amazing experience. The students learned about clay, and the firing process. We were very blessed to have Roger Casillas who fired all of our clay for the upper grades. WOW!!!! That is a ton of work, and we are so thankful!
Color mixing using tints and shades. Loved how our recycled "clock" boxes worked as a perfect canvas. Thanks to other teacher who are always saving items for me. The younger grades got new clocks to work on time and these little boxes got new life as amazing little canvases. The students loved painting on them and I loved how they did mixing their tints and shades into a simple landscape. Plus it only took us one 45 minute class period.
7-8th started out our Monster Party by drawing a monster that later will become clay. Students had so much fun getting our minds in a monster mood. Have to say this is one of my favorite weeks in the art room. Monstrous fun!!! And of course we played some "Monster Mash"music to get our creativity in the mood.
